“After the Fall” Tree walk (11/24/07

This program is to learn how to identify trees when most of them have lost their leaves, and so it started outside. The group was smaller then usual, but we were all there to learn something.  Our guide, naturalist Stacy Iwanicki, led us to some trees, where we studied the overall tree shapes, bark, twigs, buds, fallen nuts, and other clues that would help identify each tree.  After identifying some of the trees, we went inside with a collection of twigs, nuts, and dried leaves to use a dichotomous key to scientifically ID the trees.  It was a very educational and enjoyable afternoon, and we all left for home with hand outs, that included a dichotomous key for identifying trees.
