International Bog Day 2010

International Bog Day has been celebrated in Europe and Canada on the fourth Sunday of each July since 1991. Starting in 2008 the Volo Bog Natural Area, home of the southern-most open-water quaking bog in North America, brought the celebration to the United States. On July 25 we celebrated International Bog Day at Volo Bog.  The afternoon kicked off with a reception for the 20 artists who exhibited in our 3rd Annual Summer Bog Art Show.  Their instructions were to capture the essence of bogs with only one rule – work must represent or be inspired by bogs! (See form for next year).  The afternoon continued with music & stories, crafts for kids, guided bog tours, and a visit with a bog dog.

Our live music entertainment featured Melanie Spector & Tony Nuccio, who played and sang folk, country & light rock.At the same time upstairs we had crafts for children. Outside, we had guided bog tours, and in front of the Center Mike Iwanicki  introduced his Bog dog. We had beautiful weather and a great turn-out.

International Bog Day 2011

We had at least162 people (hard to keep count) enjoy the day including 17 of the 20 artists who participated in our Summer Bog Art Show. Nine of the 28 art pieces sold. The heat (90degrees or so) kept the Bog Dogs at home and probably a few visitors as well. We hope they will be able to join us in 2012.

Melanie Spector was joined again by Tony Nuccio to accent the artists’ reception with folk and country music tunes including Bog Down in the Valley-O!

Five guided bog tours were conducted by five Bog Naturalists, accommodating over 40 people, most of whom were discovering the details of Volo Bog for the first time. Thanks to Nina & Julia Denne, Christine Steffy, Billie Kocal & Barbara Zander for helping people understand what a special place Volo Bog really is.

Kids crafts included Pitcher Plant Catcher Cups & Dragonflies made of wooden clothes pins (a favorite). Melonnie Hartl, Kate Altman, Christine Steffy, Nina & Julia Denne all helped kids make crafts in celebration of bogs.

Friends of Volo Bog sold Cookies & Sodas; Bill Ewert, Carl Krautwurst & Savannah Eisenmann ran the food table. Savannah also helped as a trouble shooter - we kept her hopping all around the visitor center with various tasks.

Jerry Donahue docented behind the desk and out on the floor, welcoming guests and the artists giving the latter their name tags. He kept track of visitor numbers, and of the folks who bid on the art pieces.

Nancy Schietzelt ran the Tamarack Shop and assisted as docent as well.

Bob Vetter covered all the bases inside and out with his camera. He tried to get photos of each of the artist with their art, but missed a few. Left click on each photo and it will enlarge, and many will have titles or names.
