Educational Programs
Raptor Programs
Mr. Mark Spreyer brought to the Volo Bog Visitors Center in 2007 some of his injured Hawks & Owls and presented a very interesting and educational program on some of Lake County’s native Bird of Prey. His program is only one of many presented at Volo Bog each year. These programs are free to the public and we urge everyone to attend these exciting and informative programs. Below are photos of only two of many birds shown that day.
“Love of Owls” program
Valentine’s Day 2009
The Friends of Volo Bog were delighted to have once again Mark Spreyer from the Stillman Nature Center teach us about owls. The program started out with testing the room capacity crowd’s knowledge of owls. The children were sitting up front and right there to answer most of his questions. Mark presented the Eastern Screech owl first, and Stacy Iwanicki gave us her near perfect interpretation of the Screech Owl call. After telling us some facts on the little owl, Mark presented the noisy Barn Owl, who quiet down as soon as he was removed from his box cage. The Barn Owl was put back into his box, and Mark brought out some owl pellets, with an explanation on how and why they were formed. Last but not least, out came the Great Horned Owl, which required a change in gloves as added protection from it’s powerful talons. On the tables were some information handouts, such as the Stillman newsletter. To learn more about the Stillman Nature Center go to their website at www.stillmannc.org
