The Volunteer Veterans Conservation Corp is affiliated with Volo Bog State Natural Area, Moraine Hills State Park & McHenry Dam, a complex of Illinois Department of Natural Resources sites in western Lake County and eastern McHenry County. A cooperative effort of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources with Friends of Volo Bog, Friends of Moraine Hills State Park, and the Veterans Assistance Commission of McHenry County, the VVCC provides opportunities for veterans to continue serving their country by developing and assisting with projects to enhance our state parks and natural areas.

The initial meeting of the Veterans Conservation Corp was held on October 1st, 2011 in the Volo Bog’s visitor Center led by the Site Naturalist, Stacy Iwanicki and the Veterans Service Officer, Mike Iwanicki from the McHenry County Veterans Assistance Commission. Representing Army, Navy, and Air force, veterans attending our first meeting were Robert Bruce, Steve Domski, Big John Silva, Gary Larson, Christopher Kwon, and Bob Vetter.
