2021 FOVB Scholarship Winners

Awarding the Friends of Volo Bog Environmental Studies/Natural Science Scholarships each year is a wonderful experience for the FOVB Board of Directors!  It feels like a real investment in our future.

This year was no exception, as we awarded scholarships to three talented and ambitious students. They were selected by the Scholarship Committee from a total of 34 applicants:  11 continuing college students and 23 entering college for the first time.  We were able to award three scholarships once again because of the generosity of Dave and Cynthis LeMieux, who donated money for the third. All three scholarship winners and their families were able to join us at the Friends of Volo Bog Annual Meeting and Picnic this year, where they were introduced, read their essays to the group, and were presented with their checks.

Our winners of Entering College Scholarships this year are Ava (Gracie) Benstine of Oswego, a graduate of Oswego High School, who will be attending Augustana College, and Irena Hong, a graduate of Mount Prospect High School, who will attend the University of Minnesota. The winner of our Continuing College Scholarship is Samantha Garcia of Lake in the Hills, who has graduated from Northeastern Illinois University and will be attending the University of Illinois to earn a Master’s Degree.  The is the second scholarship we have awarded Samantha, because we were so impressed by her!

We wish each of these students all the best, and thank them for pursuing environmental careers!
