Carol Janssen.jpg

Carol Janssen

Carol Janssen was named Volunteer of the Year for Volo Bog State Natural Area. Carol began volunteering at Volo Bog in 2018 as a Weekend Bog Naturalist. When there is no docent volunteer, she tosses on her A picture containing grass, person, outdoor, glasses Description automatically generated “Docent Hat” and greets visitors in the Visitor Center, answering questions, directing them to the trails and other facilities, and running the Friends of Volo Bog’s Tamarack Shop. That same year, Carol joined the Friend of Volo Bog Board of Directors, the 501(c)(3) organation that supports Volo Bog State Natural Area.  Carol also is the co-host of Of Bogs & Books including hosting the Zoom gatherings of the group when needed. In 2020, Carol was expecting to join the team of Youth Program Naturalists to conduct bog tours for school students once per week but then… COVID. In 2021, she did lead her first children’s bog tours. During the COVID shut down, Carol worked from home to start the search for a new company to manage the garden pond outside the Visitor Center. Once the parks were re-opened, she met on site with potential candidates and screened for the best one to recommend to the Friends of Volo Bog. Carol continues to support the site’s educational programs and special events including WinterFest, World Migratory Bird Days, International Bog Day and Ghost Stories.

Dave Albright.jpg

Dave Albright of Crystal Lake was named Volunteer of the Year for Moraine Hills State Park and McHenry Dam.  Dave started volunteering as a docent and a native gardener in 2009.  In 2011, he joined the board of directors of Friends of Moraine Hills State Park, a 501(c)(3) organization where he currently serves as treasurer. Dave is a leading organizer for
Moraine Hills Run for the Hills, the Friends’ major fundraiser each September, as well the lead on applying for grants to support many projects at the park. Through his efforts, the Friends have successfully received numerous grants from The Community Foundation for McHenry County, and from McHenry County Audubon, a chapter of Illinois Audubon Society. Grants have allowed the park to add several interpretive panels along the park’s trails, binoculars overlooking the Fox River, and contributed to various habitat restoration projects throughout the park. Dave can also be found tending the native wildflower garden outside the Moraine Hills Nature Center, helping with the occasional restoration workday, updating the parks many kiosks each month, monitoring butterflies in summer, and filling bird feeders throughout the park each winter. This is Dave’s third time receiving the VOY honor; he was also recognized in 2011 and 2018.

Volunteer-of-the-Year plaques were presented remotely to Albright & Janssen by IDNR’s Site Superintendent Jacob Shurpit and
Natural Resources Coordinator Stacy Iwanicki during a joint Zoom meeting of the two Friends’ groups.  Each will receive a
Centurian Award plaque (which will also presented to all volunteers contributing over 100 hours in 2020/2021) at a date to
be determined sometime in 2022, with the hopes we can gather again in person.
