
The Friends of Volo Bog seeks a dedicated summer intern to gain hands-on experience in visitor services, digital communications, and environmental education at Volo Bog State Natural Area. This internship offers the opportunity to work with our nonprofit organization while supporting the preservation & interpretation of this unique Illinois ecosystem. This position is ideal for students interested in conservation, environmental education, communications, or nonprofit management.

June 2026: Internship begins
Internship period: June-August 2026 (flexible hours; approximately 12-13 per week)
Miminum hours: 150-160 hours over June-August 2026
Expense reimbursement stipend: Up to $2,000 reimbursement for living and transportation expenses.
Additional funding: Students are encouraged to seek additional scholarship opportunities through their university's internship funding programs.
Academic credit: This internship may qualify for academic credit through partnership arrangements with colleges and universities.

Responsibilities & Qualifications
Visitor Services & Nature Center

Assist FOVB volunteer docents in welcoming visitors and sharing information about bog educational programs

Learn docent skills through observation and mentorship from FOVB volunteers

Help maintain FOVB records and assist with administrative tasks
Environmental Education & Learning
-
Shadow and learn from experienced FOVB volunteers and naturalists
-
Participate in volunteer training on bog ecology, wildlife identification, and interpretation
-
Assist volunteers with native garden maintenance
-
Help with volunteer activities and Friends-sponsored programs
-
Learn about rare bog plant communities and willdife conservation efforts
Digital Communications & Outreach
-
Manage social media accounts for FOVB when required

Develop engaging social media content featuring bog wildlife, seasonal changes, educational programs, special events, and more

Assist with updating the FOVB website

Produce digital newsletters and promotional materials for events and programs
Required Qualifications
-
Current college student or recent graduate in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Communications, Education, or related field

Strong computer background with demonstrated experience in website design and management

Proficiency with web design platform (Wix preferred)

Strong social media skills and familiarity with content creation on Instagram and Facebook

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Interest in environmental education and natural resource conservation

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Professional demeanor for interacting with diverse visitors

Strong interpersonal skills for communication with visitors, staff, and volunteers
Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience with visitor services or public engagement

Some knowledge of Illinois native plants and ecosystems
