Volo Bog offers both educational programs and weekly walks & tours of the site.

If you're interested in school field trips or other private programming, please email DNR.Volobog@illinois.gov! We're happy to work with you. Groups of 25+ must pay a group fee.

On Eventbrite you can see what programs are coming up and register to attend. You can also see programming at nearby Moraine Hills and McHenry Dam.

Weekend & Weekday Bog Tours
Join us for a guided tour of the Interpretive Boardwalk Trail. Weekend tours are led by Friends of Volo Bog naturalists and weekday tours are led by an IDNR staff member. Either way, tour guides are familiar with the site and will teach you all about this unique ecosystem. Tours last about one hour.
Weekend tours are offered most weekends, while weekday tours vary depending on availability. Keep an eye on our Eventbrite and on-site flyers for the most accurate information.
Please come dressed for the weather. Once you're down in the bog, it may feel warmer than in the parking lot because breezes don't penetrate the dense shrub layer.
Bog tours are open to all ages, but those 14 and under must be accompanied by a legal guardian.
Walks with a Naturalist
Join us for our year-round educational nature hikes. These hikes are led by a naturalist, someone who's familiar with the site and will occasionally stop to teach you about the site's history, plants, and animals! If you see something you're curious about, you can always ask a question.
Walks with a Naturalist are offered at Moraine Hills/McHenry Dam State Park and Volo Bog State Natural Area. Walks at Volo Bog are offered periodically throughout the year; keep an eye on our Eventbrite, social media pages, and newsletter to see when one is coming up!
