Snow has transformed Volo Bog into a tapestry of white, red, brown, and black. On Sunday, I joined Stacy Iwanicki, our DNR naturalist, for a walk on the boardwalk covered with several inches of snow.
Wearing snowshoes, Stacy created a path for others to follow.
This fluffy snow begs for creativity. Look how it perches on railings and branches, inspiring imagination. What creatures do you see?
Against the white landscape, winterberry hollies glow like scarlet beacons, their brilliant berries bright against bare branches. Some berries are getting fermented, attracting Cedar waxwings. Do you see them?
Look closely and you'll discover vole highways and other burrows. These curious snow tunnels crisscross the white expanse, tiny architects at work beneath the surface.
Fresh snow tells its stories along the trail. Tracks stitch patterns as the boardwalk circles through marsh, shrub, and tamarack zones to the eye of the bog and back. Each print is a mystery waiting to be decoded.
The posts along the boardwalk have become crazy snowmen, each wearing its own wizard snow hat. Which is your favorite?
Winter's magic welcomes children and adults alike. Celebrate winter at Volo Bog and Join us at Winter Fest 2026 on January 11, 2026, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Listen to music, take a bog tour, and—not least—create your own snow sculpture!
