Hello! My name is Heidi Gibson and I’m the first summer intern with Friends of Volo Bog. I’m thrilled for this opportunity and I can’t wait to spend my next couple of months here!
A little about me: I’m studying Environmental Science at Taylor University in Upland, IN, where I just completed my sophomore year. In my free time I enjoy birding, reading, making art, and working backstage for theatre productions. After school, I’d like to work in environmental education, park interpretation, or ornithology.
I got to know Volo Bog State Natural Area back in high school, when I started volunteering; I was one of the first members of the all-volunteer restoration team in September 2023. I really fell in love with the bog during this time - it’s such a fascinating site with a rich history and even richer ecosystem. I’m grateful to return now as an intern. Volunteering at Volo Bog was my first taste of what my career might look like, so it’s only fitting that interning here is my first real job in the field, too!
This summer I’ll be working on several exciting projects, including new signage and a website revamp. I’ll also be a docent in the visitor center on some days. If you see me around, feel free to say hi!
Keep an eye out for more to come.
