The Volo Bog Herbarium

Did you know Volo Bog has its own herbarium?
It actually has several! An herbarium is a collection of dried plants labeled for scientific study. Our herbarium is split between Wetland and Prairie/Woodland species, all housed in our visitor center. We have hundreds of specimens, but visitors interested in viewing them must talk to a docent first - herbarium specimens are very fragile and cannot be handled without supervision.
Thankfully, botany-minded visitors can view a selected collection in the glass cases upstairs any time! This selection is curated by staff throughout the year to highlight what’s in bloom in the bog. This time of year, you can appreciate specimens of Meadowsweet, Water arum, and even Pitcher plant.
Next time you stop by the bog, visit our herbarium and get an up-close look at the plants you may spot off the boardwalk.

My name is Valerie Fredericks Wallace and I first met the Volo Bag in 1966. A marvelous year, which was my first year of a liberal arts college called Kendall in Evanston, Illinois. My eyes were awakened by this visit for my entire life and now that I live in Texas to be near my two grandchildren, I have become a friend of Volo Bog, I want to continue my relationship which focuses on wetlands of our wonderful world.
